1. About this policy
This policy explains how Identity Checker Ltd ("IdentityChecker", "we", "us") uses cookies and similar technologies, such as local storage, under the Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations 2003 (PECR) and the UK GDPR. It covers:
- this website, identitychecker.co.uk
- the IdentityChecker platform: the dashboard firms use to send and review checks (cms.identitychecker.co.uk) and the verification journey clients complete (verify.identitychecker.co.uk and firms' own branded verification addresses)
- the IdentityChecker mobile app
For how we handle personal data more generally, see our Privacy Policy.
2. What cookies are
Cookies are small text files a website stores on your device. Local storage and session storage do a similar job inside your browser or app. In this policy, "cookies" includes all of these.
The law allows us to use cookies that are essential to provide a service you have asked for, such as keeping you logged in, without asking first. Any other cookies, such as analytics, need your consent before they are set.
3. This website
This website does not set any cookies and does not use analytics, advertising or tracking tools. Our fonts and images are hosted on our own servers, so visiting the site does not send your details to anyone else.
The contact form works without cookies. To stop automated spam we keep a one-way, keyed hash of your IP address for up to one hour; see section 4.2 of our Privacy Policy.
If we decide to add analytics in future, we will update this policy and ask for your consent before setting any non-essential cookies.
4. The IdentityChecker platform
The dashboard and the client verification journey only use essential cookies and storage. We do not use analytics or advertising cookies on the platform, so we don't ask for consent there.
| Name | Kind | Set by | Type | Purpose | Expires |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| PHPSESSID | Cookie | IdentityChecker | Essential | Keeps you logged in to the dashboard, protects forms against cross-site request forgery and keeps your place in the client verification journey. Set as Secure, HttpOnly and SameSite=Lax. | Until you close your browser |
| idchecker_sms_collapsed | Local storage | IdentityChecker | Functional | Remembers whether you collapsed the "send link" panel on the verification page. Only set when you use that control. Contains no personal data. | Until cleared |
4.1 Specialist providers in the verification journey
Some steps of the verification journey are provided by specialist companies. Their pages or embedded screens may set their own cookies, which are needed to complete the step securely (for example, to protect against fraud). These cookies are controlled by them, not us, and are covered by their own policies.
| Provider | What it does | Where |
|---|---|---|
| Yoti | Captures your identity document and selfie, runs liveness and face-matching checks, and supports Digital ID sharing. | Inside the verification journey |
| Stripe | Takes card payments where a firm asks the client to pay for their check. You are taken to a payment page hosted by Stripe. | Stripe Checkout pages |
| Armalytix | Connects to your bank through Open Banking to provide Source of Funds information. | Source of Funds journey |
Each provider's name links to its own privacy or cookie policy.
Parts of the platform load standard code libraries from content delivery networks. These normally do not set cookies, but some networks may set a short-lived security cookie to protect against malicious traffic.
5. The IdentityChecker mobile app
Our app lets you read the chip in your passport with your phone and complete your verification. Inside the app, the verification journey uses the same essential session cookie and storage described in section 4, held in the app's private storage on your device.
The app does not contain advertising or analytics tools, does not access your device's advertising identifier and does not track you across other apps or websites. Passport chip data is sent securely to us for your check and is not kept in the app afterwards. If we ever add optional features that store or access information on your device, we will update this policy and ask for your consent in the app first.
6. Emails we send
Some emails we send, including verification requests sent on behalf of firms, may contain a small image or link tracking that tells us whether the email was delivered, opened or clicked. This helps firms see whether a client has received their verification link. Most email apps let you block images, which stops this.
7. Managing cookies in your browser
You can also block or delete cookies in your browser settings. Blocking essential cookies will stop you logging in to the dashboard or completing a verification.
The ICO's guidance on cookies has more information.
8. Changes to this policy
We review this policy whenever we change the cookies or similar technologies we use, including when we release new features in the platform or the app. The date at the top shows when it was last updated. If we start using new non-essential cookies, we will ask for your consent again.
